Photonics-Electronics Convergence
This technology replaces areas traditionally handled by electrical processing with optical processing.
As electrical systems become faster and transmission distances increase, they tend to consume more power. Optical systems, by contrast, are better able to limit increases in power consumption even as conditions change.
By leveraging this characteristic, NTT aims to achieve both higher performance and lower power consumption by gradually expanding the application of optical technologies beyond network domains and into the internal architecture of computers.
Looking ahead, this approach will enable further improvements in power efficiency.
To deliver these benefits to society, it is essential to build an ecosystem that brings together expertise across multiple areas, including device technologies, implementation, manufacturing, software, and operations.
Through these initiatives, NTT will establish optoelectronic convergence technology in a practical form and promote its implementation across society.
